Love Celebrant vs. Wedding Officiant: What’s the Difference?

If you’re planning a wedding, you’ve probably heard the term wedding officiant. But you may have also stumbled across people like me calling ourselves celebrants or, in my case, a Love Celebrant.

So what’s the difference?

A wedding officiant is someone legally authorized to perform your marriage ceremony. A Love Celebrant does that too, but for me, the work goes much deeper.

I’m interested in you. Your story. Your people. What makes you laugh. What makes you cry. What you believe about love and partnership. And how we can create a celebration that feels unmistakably like the two of you.

Because your ceremony doesn’t have to feel like something you’re performing.

It can feel like coming home to yourselves.

What Does a Wedding Officiant Do?

At its simplest, a wedding officiant is the person who makes your marriage official. They lead the ceremony, witness your vows and consent to marry, complete the marriage license, and make sure the legal pieces are handled correctly.

Some officiants offer a simple, straightforward ceremony. Others create something more personalized.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with either. The question is simply:

What do you want your ceremony to feel like?

So, What Is a Love Celebrant?

Love Celebrant is the name I use for the way I’ve been doing this work for nearly 20 years.

Yes, I’m a wedding officiant. I can legally marry you, lead your ceremony, and take care of the marriage license.

But the heart of my work is celebration.

I want to know who you are beneath all the expectations about who you’re supposed to be. Together, we discover what matters most to you, create a ceremony rooted in your story and values, and celebrate the hell out of the love you’ve created.

For me, a Love Celebration isn’t about putting on a beautiful show.

It’s about feeling deeply seen, connected, and celebrated for exactly who you are.

Love Celebrant vs. Wedding Officiant: Which Is Right for You?

If you simply want someone warm and capable to lead your ceremony and make your marriage legal, a traditional wedding officiant may be exactly what you need.

But if you want the ceremony itself to be one of the most meaningful parts of your celebration, you may be looking for something more.

You might be my kind of people if you want to:

  • feel deeply known rather than perform for an audience

  • question traditions instead of automatically following them

  • laugh, cry, play, and actually feel something

  • honor your identities, values, chosen family, and unique story

  • create a ceremony that could only belong to the two of you

There’s no single right way to get married.

There’s the way that feels true to you.

Especially for Queer & Beautifully Non-Traditional Couples

For queer, trans, and beautifully non-traditional couples, a ceremony can hold an extra layer of meaning.

It’s an opportunity to decide for yourselves what love, partnership, family, and commitment look like, rather than simply inheriting a script that may never have been written with you in mind.

That doesn’t mean throwing every tradition away. It means getting curious.

What feels like us?

That question is at the heart of everything I do.

Your identities deserve to be affirmed. Your relationship deserves to be deeply known. And your love deserves to be joyfully celebrated.
